From 9 July 1981. (16 pages) An L&N train hauling coal derailed at Glomawr. 19-year-old Calvin Campbell was shot in the jaw early Saturday morning along the Krypton railroad tracks. He was taken to the UK Medical Center in Lexington. The election lawsuit of Bob Byrge versus V.G. Combs was underway. Running for sheriff, Byrge lost to Combs during the Democratic primary and filed claims of voting violations. Weddings or engagements included Penny Day & James Jolly, Aileen Feltner & Robert Newberry, Shirlene Clemons & Timothy Jones, and Marsha Kaye Brashear & Alan Beuscher. From 14 July 1970. (12 pages) Buckhorn teacher and basketball coach Mickey Joe Fields was dead. He was returning from a speedway in Breathitt County when he was shot in the brain. Breathitt County Deputy Sheriff Goley Salyers was charged with manslaughter related to his death. The Woodland Motel sold at auction for $52,000. Enoch Combs of Hazard was attacked with a knife and suffered a wound to his throat. Randall Williams was charged in the attack with cutting and wounding with intent to kill. Birth announcements. In baseball, the Babe Ruth and Little League All-Star teams were announced. Hazard golfer Bill Douglas was the winner of the WYGO Golf Tournament at Corbin. Donna Carol Fugate and Wayne Maurice Davis were married on 19 June at the First Presbyterian Church in Hazard. Clay Allen of Blue Diamond had died and was buried at the Flatwoods Cemetery in Noble, Kentucky.

From 20 August 1964. (12 pages) Vagrancy? Civil rights? Citing no visible means of support, Judge Noplis ran two students out of town by threatening to charge them with vagrancy. Charles Koehler and Sally Suskind’s visit to Hazard was sponsored by the Appalachian Committee for Full Employment, the Committee for Miners, and Students for a Democratic Society. They were here to inform underprivileged people of their rights. Judge Noplis gave them 24 hours to leave town. Arbitration was underway for a proposed Appalachian Regional Hospital contract, which would reduce wages for service workers. 500 people attended the dedication of the lodge at Buckhorn Lake. The City Board of Commissioners determined that annexation of Christopher, Diablock, and Cornett Hill was not financially feasible. Preliminary plans for a reservoir at Carrs Fork were explained to local residents by the Louisville Corps of Engineers. In high school football, M.C. From Monday, 23 June 1958. Dr. Marcus Steele opened his dental practice in Hazard. It was located above the Gross Steak House. Jury selection was complete for the trial of Curt Colwell and Elmer Kilburn. They were facing charges related to the death of Lillie Valentine who had been killed when someone fired two shotgun blasts through the window of her tavern. Elizabeth Alcorn and Jean Fugate were involved in a traffic accident at the corner of Lovern Street and the by-pass. Dr. Ralph Seaman, a graduate of Hazard High School, was in critical condition after being thrown from his car during a car accident in Lexington. Clarence Overtone and Bill Dozier of Perry County were killed in a car accident in Manchester. Others who were injured included Bear Bailey, James Wheeler, and Sylvester King. The City of Hazard was preparing for the annexation of Lothair. Dr. Eli C. Boggs was spearheading fundraising efforts to save Mt. Mary Hospital. The 1963 firing of Ira Kilburn by the Hazard Police Department was affirmed in Circuit Court by Special Judge William Dixon, and Kilburn’s appeal was dismissed. Flooding provisions of potential new buildings were revised for the North Main Street urban renewal project. Projects for Liberty and High Streets were already in progress. Estill Holbrook of Leatherwood pleaded not guilty to the murder of Robert Couch. Extensive Little League baseball coverage.   From 22 June 1964. A fire on Main Street left 32 people homeless. Two apartment buildings were destroyed and a home badly damaged. The fire started in the apartment building formerly known as the Union Messenger building. The city was alerted to the blaze by a train whistle blown by an engineer working at the L&N yards. The buildings were already targeted for destruction as part of the city’s urban renewal project and were not rebuilt. An airplane crashed on the property of Gene Combs near the Grand Vue Drive-In at Airport Gardens. Bud Igo, the plane’s pilot, was unharmed, while passenger Virgil Foley escaped with a broken nose. With a final adjusted bid of $822,500, a contract to build a new courthouse was awarded to W.D. Johnson of Ashland. A preliminary hearing was rescheduled for Lester Holbrook of Leatherwood who was charged with the murder of Robert Couch, also of Leatherwood.
