From 4 September 1958. (8 pages) A fire at the Hazard Lunch Cafe caused $2,000 in damage and required 2 pumper trucks to keep it from spreading to other buildings. A fire started by someone smoking in bed completely destroyed a third-floor room at the Grand Hotel. Parents at the Saul Grade School of Lower Leatherwood were angry with school teacher Don Rice and accused him of several "immoral acts" and demanded he be fired. At Kodak, school teacher Elizabeth Deaton was being threatened by moms with physical violence. With a classroom overcrowded with 45 students, Deaton moved 10 students to a different classroom where a lower grade was taught. The moms assumed their children had been demoted and went door to door demanding Deaton be removed. She had 16 years of teaching experience.
